Akash Parekar

A British-born classical sitarist bringing a soulful, contemporary voice to the depth of Indian classical tradition.

Akash Parekar is part of a new generation of sitar artists shaping what Indian classical music can feel like today - rooted in tradition, but alive to the world around it.

A disciple of renowned sitarist Roopa Panesar, Akash’s playing carries both discipline and feeling. His sound is expressive, atmospheric and deeply human, shaped by the emotional depth of Indian classical music and the sensitivity of a musician raised between cultures.

Akash is a disciple of internationally renowned sitarist Roopa Panesar, whose guidance has shaped his understanding of raga, expression and the discipline required of a classical musician.

He has also received guidance from respected musicians including Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, Ustad Harjinderpal Singh and Ustad Irshad Khan. These influences have helped ground his playing in the depth and rigour of Indian classical music, while giving him the space to develop a voice of his own.

Rooted in Tradition

A Sound Between Worlds

Drawing from both his Western musical upbringing and his training in Indian classical music, Akash has developed a sound that feels both rooted and contemporary.

His playing is expressive, melodic and thoughtful, balancing the structure of classical performance with a natural sense of atmosphere and emotion. Rather than focusing on virtuosity alone, he aims to create performances that connect with audiences and invite them into the music.

The result is a style that feels accessible without compromising depth - shaped by tradition, experience and a genuine love for the sitar.

Akash has performed at major venues and festivals including the Royal Albert Hall, Glastonbury Festival, Birmingham Symphony Hall and De Montfort Hall. He has also collaborated with artists including Zak Starkey, Mayur Navekar and Michael Tedstone.

Alongside his classical work, he enjoys exploring creative collaborations and new musical settings. While firmly rooted in the classical tradition, he is equally interested in how the sitar can engage with different audiences, genres and artistic ideas.

Whether performing in a concert hall, at a festival, for a private event or as part of a collaborative project, his focus remains the same: creating meaningful musical experiences through the sound of the sitar.
